Good Gut Bacteria:

Do you suffer from gas and bloating? Constipation or diarrhoea|? Fatigue? Headaches? Sugar cravings? Regular colds/infections? Poor skin? Foggy brain?

All of these are signs that unhealthy bacteria are taking up too much room in your gut. This is very common considering how vulnerable your gut bacteria are to environmental insults. These can include stress, poor diet, numerous antibiotics, chlorinated water, pollution and chemicals.

DIET is critical. Sugar and sugary foods actually nourish the bad or pathogenic bacteria, yeast and fungi in your gut.

So eating more of the denser carbohydrates such as brown rice, quinoa, seeded breads, whole wheat pasta, lentils and beans as well as all vegetables help to restore the balance of bacteria.

Eating fermented food will also help to “reseed” your body with good bacteria.

If you do not regularly eat the traditionally fermented foods below, then a probiotic supplement is recommended.

Kefir. – fermented milk.

Lassi – an Indian yoghurt drink.

Miso – fermented soy.

When choosing fermented foods steer away from pasteurised versions, which destroy many of the naturally occurring probiotics. These include many of the probiotic drinks as they are pasteurised and typically contain added sugars, fructose corn syrup, artificial colouring or sweeteners.

When choosing a good probiotic look for –

-       The bacteria strains that can survive your stomach acid and bile so that it reaches your intestines intact.

-       The bacteria strains must have confirmed health-promoting features.

-       Keep in the refrigerator as it is a live bacteria and is protected in the cool.

The basis of a strong immune system begins in the gut so tending to the bacteria in your gut is paramount and is an ongoing process. Provided with the proper nourishment – fermented foods, a high quality probiotic supplement and avoidance of antibiotics and other environmental assaults, your gut bacteria will flourish and reward you with good health. Latest research implicates the importance of gut bacteria in some chronic diseases such as overweight, insulin sensitivity, any inflammatory diseases and mood disorders.

Ruth recommends “ECODOPHILUS” from Bionutri 1 daily at breakfast.

Fuelled by Jackson Bars

Posted by Steve Bailey on June 30, 2011 3 Comments

Go guys!

We're not in the habit of ambushing people (although that's twice in a week - but that's another story) but when we came across these fit, healthy specimens en route from Lands End to John O'Groats by bicycle we couldn't help ourselves from stopping and offering them our Original Jackson Bars to fuel their journey.

The elite group of Guardsmen from Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards will cycle the 1,407 km from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for the Colonel's Fund

The Jackson Bars are packed nutritional goodness, a great all-round snack, but also ideal for long-distance, endurance cyclists pushing hard and needing energy.  These guys are certainly fit their normal ceremonial public duties are guarding Buckingham Palace yet always ready to deploy on operations as did some of the guardsmen who headed off for combat patrol in Helmand with a week's notice in January last year.

Fuelled by The Jackson Bar, our version of a time-honoured classic, son of the flapjack - they'll notice we took the sugar out!  We created the Jackson Bar because we couldn't find a healthy, nutritional snack for our young family - now we make them for everyone.  We even made it our mission: to sell real food that can make you healthy, give service to make you happy and enrich the lives of others in a fun way!

Take a leaf - don't fill up with empty calories and get the sugar rushes and slumps - our bars, sweetened with honey and brown rice syrup are a tasty, satisfying and convenient bar.  It's like porridge without the bowl - and your choice of topping is our choice of flavours - each one a great source of nutrients including minerals, vitamins, essential amino and fatty acids.

As part of a balanced, healthy diet The Jackson Bar can make you healthy!  Checkout our 6 different flavours...

And you can support the guardsmen by donating on their website and promote them by liking them on their facebook page.

Be healthy - be happy xx

Never too old to be healthy...

Posted by Steve Bailey on March 12, 2011 0 Comments

Yesterday was Judo training for Ted you may have met Ted he’s the youngest Bailey.  This is always a high impact, high energy and high spirits hour and a half that wear’s me out just watching (thinks, am I too old to go back to Judo?)

So, I’m sitting there, watching from the benches, when I’m accosted by Stan!  Stan CantrillStan Cantrill is our club’s chairman and senior coach, but the accolades don’t stop there.

At hhmmm years old he recently won Herefordshire Sportsman of the year; Herefordshire and Worcestershire Senior Male Sports Personality; gold in the Hungarian Masters tournament in March and is now a 5th Dan black belt, as a result; bronze at the European Judo Union World Championships in Sindelfingen;  winning two bronze medals and a GB Gold at the World Masters Athletic Championships in Atlanta; gold at the British Master championship, retaining his title again for the third year in a row and securing his place in the GB squad; then bronze at the European Union Veterans tournament in Lignano, Italy placing the GB squad 6th overall.

Take a breath...

So when Stan, who is also a qualified sports nutritionist and sports therapy lecturer of 15 years standing. speaks, you listen.

In addition to reminding me not to sit with my legs crossed, he quoted the familiar but oft forgotten “Breakfast Like A King, Lunch Like A Prince, Dine Like A Pauper” attributed to the late, great Adelle Davis.

Needless to say, I was quick to make a mental note to share this with you because I, like many, succumb to the modern, upside down version of this and end up heading to bed on a full stomach – not good!

Thanks, Stan, this is a good reminder to plan a healthier eating regime – I’ll put some work into this and share some ideas…

Stan is now sponsored by Baileys Real Foods and will be taking a supply of Jackson Bars to the London 2012 Olympics!  Good Luck Stan!

It's Valentine's Day

Posted by Steve Bailey on February 14, 2011 0 Comments

Happy Valentine's Day!  Whether you celebrate or not; subscribe to the view that you don't need a set day to declare your love for someone; that it's too commercial, a marketing exercise, or just another reason to spend...

You only have to look at www.meish.org/vd - we like:

  www.meish.org/vd

one thing is true: all you need is love!

  1. A little love goes a long way.  And it's often the little gestures that mean the most.  Have you ever tried smiling at a stranger?  Go on, try today.  Not only will you make their day but you'll feel better too!
  2. All things grow with love.  Whether it's a carefully tended plant, a newborn babe or a timid, straggly stray.  Simply knowing that you're there, that you care, that they're not alone is enough to thrive.
  3. Love is...  Love is what you need it to be - we are all individuals with different needs and desires.  Respecting that in others is the first step to reaping the reward of love.

So we say: don't forget the 'one' you love today (you'll be in trouble if you don't) but remember to spread a little love and happiness too.

Lots of Love

How Kellogg's changed our lives...

Posted by Steve Bailey on December 01, 2010 0 Comments

Did you see the BBC 2 'Foods That Make Millions' series exploring how big businesses transform commodities into profitable brands, last night, the episode looks at how cereals have transformed the way we eat and live?

It was great to see the likes of Michael Pollan and Felicity Lawrence, both Bailey's favorites, and to see the story behind the rise to popularity of the sugary, carb-rich breakfasts we all now take for granted as the norm.

Way back when, we set out to try and make a difference, even in just our small way.  The Jackson Bars were born from our need to find a healthy, satisfying snack for our own family with less sugar and no added anything!

Perhaps one day The Jackson Bar will be the snack of choice after a hearty, protein rich breakfast - what's wrong with the good old British bacon and eggs? - to keep energy levels even and avoid the sugar rushes and energy crashes that we all seem to accept these days!

Watch this, it's available 'til 14 December BBC iplayer linkand see why other snack bars can be cheaper but not necessarily better!

We're nut's on health!

Posted by Steve Bailey on November 16, 2010 0 Comments

That was the title of a recent headline in the Daily Express on 21 October.  Apparently, as a nation, we're shunning crisps and chocolate in favour of nuts seeds and dried fruit.  According to Mintel, specialists in telling us what we do, nearly half the population - many over 45's - now buy nuts as an alternative to crisps as they are packed with omega-6 for brain boosting, the other half go for dried fruits instead of sweets.  "Consumers now want a nutritious snack." they told the paper.

The Single Hot Spice Jackson BarWell hallelujah!  We're delighted that the message is getting out to a wider audience.  Oh and look no further for a nutritious snack - The Jackson Bar fits the bill perfectly.  Loaded with seeds, nuts, fruit, British oats and honey and brown rice syrup to sweeten.

NO wheat, NO dairy, NO transfats.

But more on that later!
